A Danish pub found itself in trouble for hosting an illegal lottery. The establishment wanted to offer a playful game for its customers, allowing them to predict a three-digit number for a reward. However, due to strict regulations on raffles and lotteries in Denmark, the pub received a 5,000 kroner penalty (approximately $768). Apparently, they were unaware that only charitable organizations can conduct such drawings, with the proceeds designated for charitable purposes. Despite receiving a warning, the bar continued the game, leading to intervention by the authorities. The Danish Gambling Authority (DGA) emphasized that this was not a minor oversight, as the pub was also taking wagers on official, state-run lotteries, which is prohibited. Consequently, the case went to court, and the judge imposed the fine on the bar. The DGA aims to use this as a cautionary tale, highlighting that gambling, even when seemingly harmless, must adhere to regulations.
The judicial body recognized that the unlawful gaming activity was minor and encompassed a restricted group of individuals. The penalty reflected their consideration of the fact that the defendant’s entity did not receive direct financial gain from the endeavor.
